It’s Football Season! What’s Your Goal Setting Strategy?

It’s always great hearing inspiring words and this football themed post from a guest writer (who asked to remain anonymous) poses an interesting question.  It may just be the catalyst to help you create a game-winning strategy for your life.  So, enter our anonymous guest blogger…

“How about that game last night?”

“Did you SEE that touchdown?”

“You wouldn’t believe the tailgate we planned last Saturday! What a party!”

Does this ‘water cooler talk’ early in the week back at work sound familiar? Similarly, you can hear the same conversations taking place in lecture halls and campus quads across the nation among die-hard student football fans.

Football seems to have become the nation’s favorite pastime- actually, there’s no denying it is the definitive pastime in the Fall…and in the South.

We love our alma mater, attending games each season and rooting them on during a tv or online broadcast whenever we can’t be there for the live action, but compared to most football fans we know we are quite laid back followers of the season.

It is typical of a football fan to spend thousands of dollars in travel to away games, tickets, and tailgating supplies. Time is also spent heavily in the Fall, solely with enjoying football. Hours of researching stats, participating in a fantasy league, and watching afternoon and evening games of teams you couldn’t even locate on a map- just for the excitement and camaraderie you share with fellow fans. Just to be in the know on who’s moving up in the rankings.

Now, there’s no talking anyone out of not following football this Fall…it is certainly not our intention or interest. Rather, we are taking the opportunity to pose a question to you:

What if you spent one afternoon this month with the tv off (most teams have a bye weekend anyway!) focusing not on touchdowns, hand-offs, and triple option offenses, but rather on your future?

What if you spent your money not on a tailgating keg or new team jersey but instead purchased a self-improvement book, attended a conference of a subject you are interested in learning more about, or funded a local charity or scholarship program that promotes education?

Take a timeout from your normal work/play routine to focus on your own goals for the coming season, 2012, or beyond. This focus could be on college preparation, career advancement, self-improvement or strengthening family relationships.

Just as effective team coaches prepare all week for victory with intense practices, strategy meetings and opponent videotape scrutiny, you too can spend an hour Sunday night planning goals for the week ahead to make yourself a better player in life.

Sharing the enthusiasm of a game-winning run with thousands (millions?) of like-minded football fans is invigorating but fleeting. Nothing compares to the lasting impact and insight you’ll gain as an inspired individual creating a game-winning strategy to your life!

Tune in next time to continue our discussion of football season and life goals for a glossary of pigskin-revised terms that can help make it a personal winning season!

  1. Good sound advice. Thanks for sharing.

  2. Nice to have a guest blogger (even if they want to remain anonymous).

…and like, I always say – you’ve got to have the map to know where you’re going. See your ideal future vision and then, take massive action to make it happen! So, however or whenever you want to do it, taking time to set your goals and then going after them with committed action is a must do.

(by the way, nice find on the picture – I’ll take those boys on my team any day :) …and Go Jackets!
