Excursion 7: Succeeding

Congratulations on making it this far!  This shows you are a dedicated person and are committed to yourself.  That is the first step in finding success in college and life.

By now, you have learned quite a bit about yourself.  You’ve worked through your goals and future vision for yourself.  You’ve developed a list of target schools, and you’ve written your applications.  Now, what’s next?  The next part of the college process is focused on succeeding in college.

This section is intended to give you some idea what college is like for many people.  This is a significant transition, and it means not only leaving home (in most cases), but also being in charge of aspects of your life that you may not have been in charge of  in the past—including finances, nutrition, and a more abundant amount of free time—and will be very different than your high school experience.  Throughout this exercise, we will ask that you take the time to develop a set of potential activities and goals that reflect how you will spend you time at school.  These priorities will help you make wise choices during your transition.

Some key points:

  • You are defining what “success” is at school
  • You are deciding how to spend your time at school

Set goals for your freshman year related to several aspects of college life:  academic, social, personal, athletic, community service, etc.
