Excursion 1: Focusing

You are in the midst of an exciting time in your life when you are exposed to so many connections and have access to so much knowledge.  The next few years really can and should be a catapult to propel you in the direction you want to go in the rest of your life.

Choosing your field of study is complicated, and it is a significant decision for you both personally and academically.  You have the power to make a decision that will be best for you.

We all ask: What should I major in?  What career do I want to go into?

Fortunately, there are many methods that will to help lead you down the path to that choice, but remember that the choice is yours.  Many people who mean well will give advice suggesting a major or a career, but that advice is often based on their own needs or interests and not yours.  Also, no assessment needs to tell you what to do.  Assessments should be a guide in helping to figure out what is best for you.  The “answer” is not necessarily linked directly to a vocation at this point-there may be multiple “answers” at this stage in life. You may choose a liberal arts program because of the wide range of options.  Choosing a field of study is about the years after college, but it is also about the years during college.  What courses interest you?  What can learn now that you will want to know later in lifer?

The best way to decide on a major and an eventual career is not to take a look at the list offered by your school, but rather to look at yourself.  The following pages contain several valuable exercises that will allow you to spend time reflecting, thinking and creating.  This should be the first step for considering the right major for you, as it will allow you to consider your ideal future career.  It provides initial elements that will allow you to jump-start your personal development, so you can and will create your ideal future.

The process of assessing yourself will help you focus on an ideal set of colleges.  The process includes an evaluation of:

  • Your interests and motivations
  • Your abilities and skills
  • Your priorities and values
  • Your personality and personal characteristics
